How to pick party games that don’t make things awkward
Suggesting a game at a work party can backfire. Here’s how to pick games everyone gets instantly and nobody feels picked on.
Start with a game that needs no explanation
The first round or two should need zero rules. Card Flip is just "pick a card, the dud loses". That’s why Unlucky Party always opens with Card Flip (or Tap Frenzy for skill sessions).
Mix luck and skill
All luck gets old fast; all skill means the same person always loses. Choose "Mixed" in the host settings and luck and skill games alternate, so the losses spread around.
- Get loud: Hot Potato Bomb, Chicken Button
- Watch together: Random Race, Group Ladder
- Quiet showdowns: Odd Color Out, Exactly 10 Seconds
Keep the stakes light
Write the stake in the lobby and it appears on the final results. Pick something everyone can laugh about rather than pressure to drink.
- Buys the next round of coffee
- Sings the first karaoke song
- Takes the group photo
- Posts a good-morning message in the group chat tomorrow
A sample flow
- The host creates a room and drops the link in the group chat
- Once everyone is in, choose "Mixed" and "Quick 3"
- Stake: "buys the coffee"
- Three games later, the unluckiest is crowned. Hit "One more round" if you want

🃏Card FlipOne card per player, and exactly one dud. Everyone picks a card, then they are revealed one at a time. No explanation needed, which makes it the perfect first game.💣Hot Potato BombWhen the bomb lands on your phone, tap a runaway button three times to pass it on. Nobody knows when it will blow.🏇Random RaceEveryone’s animal runs the same track. They trip, they surge, they slip on bananas. Just don’t finish last.⏱️Exactly 10 SecondsThe clock is visible for 3 seconds, then disappears. Hit STOP at exactly 10.00. Furthest from 10 loses.
